The same SOHC 1.8 as the base Golf. It’s just the GTI suspension, trim, and interior on a Golf. Still a fun car, and the SOHC engines actually feel better than 16V’s at low revs, but it’s down about 30hp.

What is the code for the engine?

maybe thats why it was so confusing i swear everytime i try to research a powertrain and wikipedia is like a freaking enigma code.

I forget, I don’t have the pre-ABA 8V codes memorized. I can look it up accurately at work on Monday. Between those and all the different transmission codes it’s a mess. I do know the 8v GTI engine is identical to the standard car.

Actually, GTI engines got different codes due to whatever minor difference made it a GTI engine that year. (Usually a slightly more open exhaust, really.)

GTI for 1989 would’ve been engine code PF (105 hp), versus engine code RV (100 hp) for the standard car. Both had Digifant (although RV had Digifant I in California, versus 49-state RVs and all PFs having Digifant II).

For previous years with CIS or CIS-E, GX (85 hp) was the American market standard engine (and I’ve seen a 85 Jetta with CIS-E, and an 86 Jetta with CIS, there seems to be no rhyme or reason for that), MZ (90 hp, CIS-only, leaded gas support) was the Canadian market standard engine for the first year or two IIRC, HT (100 hp) was the GTI/GLI motor for 1985, and RD (102 hp) was the GTI/GLI motor after that, until the Golf GT replaced the GTI. (Not quite sure what happened there. Most of my Mk2 knowledge is about ME, MF, and 1V - the diesels.)

Not that reliably (you’ll get a generic code like “least powerful diesel” or such), better is to find the build label, or...
